What’s Up With All the Rubber Duck Billboards? From the Carolinas to Michigan, Illinois to Pennsylvania, and everywhere in between, something strange has been catching drivers’ eyes: giant yellow rubber ducks on billboards.

No words. No logos. No slogans. Just a rubber duck, sitting on a bold red background. Sometimes it peeks in from the side of the billboard, sometimes it’s front and center. Always big. Always bright. Always impossible to ignore.

Naturally, people are talking. On Reddit, one Charleston driver asked, “Does anyone know what the duck billboards are for?” Another chimed in: “I saw this too on the way home on 526 and thought I was losing my mind or that I’d seen something I hadn’t actually seen.”

The campaign has even made headlines. The Post and Courier called it a roadside mystery, sparking curiosity across South Carolina. And that’s exactly the point.

Marketing experts say this works because it’s simple, smile-inducing, and—most importantly—curiosity-driven.

“People have a pure desire to resolve curiosity, but it has to be pure,” explained Elise Ince, associate professor of marketing at the University of South Carolina. “The symbol of a rubber duck has zero clear negative connotations—in fact, it may bring a smile to the face of drivers.”

She also noted that in today’s media-saturated world, billboards like this can stand out in ways traditional ads don’t.

“We’ve become very good at ignoring ads. You turn off the TV, you press mute, you delete the email. More and more now, companies are trying to find situations where consumers cannot escape ads. Roadways are one of those places.”

So who’s behind the ducks?

Adams Outdoor Advertising—the company that owns the billboards—is keeping quiet about the final reveal, but they aren’t hiding their delight.

“We’re thrilled to hear the duck campaign is stirring up plenty of curiosity. That’s exactly what we wanted,” said Brandie Hayes, Adams Outdoor’s general sales manager for Florence and Beaufort.

For now, the mystery continues. Adams Outdoor has even launched a LinkedIn poll asking, “What do you think is up with the ducks?” A full reveal is expected later this month.

Until then, the ducks will keep popping up in cities, neighborhoods, and highways across nine states. Whether it’s a warm-up for something bigger, a clever marketing stunt, or just ducks being ducks, one thing’s certain: they’ve got people talking.

And maybe that’s the point.

UPDATE:

What the Duck? The Story Behind the Yellow Takeover

For months, drivers across all 18 Adams Outdoor Advertising markets have been doing double takes. Billboards, posters, and digital displays suddenly flooded with bright yellow rubber ducks—no logos, no slogans, no explanation. Just ducks. The mysterious takeover sparked a wave of curiosity, online buzz, and plenty of “What the duck is going on?” moments.

Now, the secret’s out.

This was no random flocking. It was a bold, company-wide “tease and reveal” campaign crafted by AdLab, our award-winning in-house creative team. The goal? To showcase the unmatched impact of outdoor advertising. From storytelling and custom creative to eye-catching billboard extensions and over 1,500 real-life rubber ducks, every detail was designed to stop traffic—and start conversations.

The Reveal Is Here

As the 12-week campaign enters its final phase, we’re updating copy across markets to bring the full story to life. Expect duck-themed drop-offs, client shout-outs, and fresh creative rolling out through October 19, 2025. The fun isn’t over—it’s just getting quack-tastic.
