About Memorial Day
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors U.S. military personnel who died in service. Originating after the Civil War as Decoration Day, it became a federal holiday in 1971. Communities nationwide hold parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence to pay tribute. While many celebrate with barbecues and gatherings, the day’s true meaning is a solemn remembrance of those who sacrificed for freedom, ensuring their legacy lives on. (Learn more)
